What We Do | R&D

Citizen is constantly thinking about future developments and ways to improve the REnU offering. As time passes, Citizen will role out additional services and products to be sold in addition to or bundled with its existing offering. Some exciting developments that the Company expects to role out in the near future are detailed below.

Demand-side Management

The Company is developing its operating systems to provide the customer with true demand side management. The home and all of its appliances will be managed by the home energy interface. From this interface, the Customer can control when appliances should be used to minimize energy costs and to potentially create revenue for the Customer in power arrangements with the utility. It is likely that customers will have complete control of the interface from remote locations, so that governing appliance use or tasking appliances at specific times can occur while the customer is away from home. A neat feature would be to call in on the commute home and task the air conditioner to begin cooling the house down.

The interface has several other features that it will be capable of. Citizen will bring together energy management, communications, the Internet, television, home automation, and home security all under one roof. We look forward to bringing this to life, and we hope that you get as excited about the interface’s potential as we are.

Energy Storage

There is a way to enhance the REnU and that is to add an energy storage system – “ESS.” Whether it is a lithium-ion battery bank or the cutting edge flywheel and micro-compressed-air energy storage systems, the REnU can store and release energy on demand.

The most immediate benefit of ESS is that it ensures 100% electricity. No more brown outs, rolling black-outs, or service disruptions caused by man-made or natural disasters.

But in addition to that, a simple system – if engineered correctly – can be leveraged to generate less energy than consumed and still meet the needs in a TOU trade-off. An example of this arrangement is if a customer generates 10 KWh of electricity during peak hours and uses 20 KWh during off-peak hours. If the cost of electricity during off-peak is 4 cents and the avoided cost during peak is 8 cents, then the customer would owe nothing to the utility. As you can see, this arrangement means that the customer only needs to produce half of what he or she typically consumes, and in turn, reduces the customer’s energy bill by 50%.

Citizen is hard at work developing this system improvement; our goal is to capitalize on all of the green power generated.
